Save the Train

What is this, and how can I help?

Since the Coalition began in January, we’ve seen a significant increase in ridership along the routes that serve Northwest Philadelphia, bringing daily ridership closer to what it was before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Systemwide, according to SEPTA, ridership recovery is at 70%. However, on the Chestnut Hill West Regional Rail Line, ridership recovery jumped from 73% in December to 83% in May. On the Chestnut Hill East line, the increase was 12 percentage points, from 57% of pre-pandemic ridership to 69%. Ridership on the 23 bus route increased from 69% of its pre-pandemic rate to 87%. We’ve made real progress, but we need to do more to encourage public transit use.

We’ve created the Ride Northwest Philly Transit Equity Ambassador (TEA) Program to do just that: educate, engage, and encourage different communities from across the region to ride SEPTA.

Dear Community Member,

You may have heard that SEPTA is facing a huge budget crisis and may have to slash services and hike fares soon. This would affect everyone who relies on public transportation, especially those who ride the Chestnut Hill West Line connecting our Northwest neighborhoods to Center City.

This line is in danger of being eliminated unless SEPTA gets the critical funding it needs from the state. That’s why we need your help to make our voices heard and demand action from Governor Shapiro and our legislators in Harrisburg.

View Zoom recording of  Tuesday January 23rd at 7 p.m. meeting, where we will discuss how we can organize and advocate for saving the Chestnut Hill West Line. This meeting is co-hosted by West Central Germantown Neighbors, West Mt Airy Neighbors, Chestnut Hill Community Association, Pomona Cherokee Civic Council, Mt Airy CDC, West Chelten Neighbors, and East Mt Airy Neighbors.
