CHESTNUT HILL CENTER for ENRICHMENT

Upcoming Calendar

Tue. June 2: Monique McLaughlin, RN, will present information and answer questions about PAD (“peripheral arterial disease”, which afflicts 1 in 20 adults over 50 years of age, limiting blood flow to the extremities and doubling the chance of stroke and heart attack. Learn how diet, exercise and medication can lower the risk of developing this condition or improve quality of life once PAD is diagnosed. Ms. McLaughlin is an instructor for the American Heart Association, certified in CPR/First Aid and Gerontology with 24 years of nursing experience. Her presentation is free; we will serve one of our simple but tasty lunches ($3) beforehand.
Tue., June 9: Diane Newman, RN, will visit the Center to talk about bladder fitness after 50. Come, listen, learn. Leave shyness at home. Urinary tract infection, enlarged prostate and incontinence can have a significant impact on our lives as we get older; but the good news is that these conditions can be treated or controlled, and life improves. Ms. Newman is a Certified Nurse Practitioner at the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Urology. Once again, the program is free; eat lunch with us first ($3 per person).
Tue. June 16: In honor of the Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee just past, we are showing “Spellbound”, the intriguing documentary that followed 8 students pursuing the 1999 national prize.
Fri. June 19: A day in & around New Hope…Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve...art galleries and artists’ studios…New Hope-Ivyland Railroad…shops and restaurants…Bucks County Historical Society…wine tasting at a local vineyard. The Center will provide transportation, so you can have most of the day to decide for yourselves what to see and do. Reserve & pay for transportation with a $20 deposit by June 5.
Sun. June 21: (Father’s Day) Fundraising event = a matinee performance of “Jake’s Women”, another story of relationships from Neil Simon. For $30 you can enjoy the show plus an hors d’oeuvre / dessert reception. The party start at 12:30 at The Stagecrafters, 8130 Germantown Avenue. Bring your dad or let your kids bring you. Come with friends and their dads. RSVP no later than June 7.
Tue. June 23: Rebecca Snyder Phillips, RN, is scheduled to review the most up-to-date information about over-the-counter and prescription medications available to treat conditions which commonly afflict those of us 50-and-better. Bring questions. Get answers. Ms. Phillips, Director of Penn Nursing Consultation Services, also holds a Master of Science in Nursing. Lunch at the Center, $3; Nurse Becky, free!
Tue. June 30: A special treat … the Center’s Play Reading group will introduce the movie version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which they read aloud (“script in hand”) last month. Come with questions about playreading, how the stageplay and movie are different technically, and so on. The 1988 movie stars Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeifer.

LOOKING AHEAD

Return of Water Workout: The Center for Enrichment is in discussion with possible outdoor venues for this very popular activity led by Kelly Kaiser. We plan an 8-week course (Tue & Thu mornings) costing members approximately $100. Space is limited. Call the office NOW to reserve your place.
July: Day Trip to Independence Seaport Museum & Sail on the Delaware. The Center will provide transportation to & from for $20/person; admission / activity fees under discussion. Exact date depends on Seaport Museum scheduling its ship for the sunset sail. Tell us NOW if you are interested.
A Cruise in 2010: We need your input … Are you interested? Where would you like to go? How long do you want to be away? Do you have a cruise line to recommend? Contact Sue or Mary with your answers (and questions) as soon as possible, so that we can respond appropriately to the many tour companies wanting to send us on the high seas or inland waterways.
“Resource Fair” in September: The Center will gather together representatives from adult residences, activity programs, and services (social, financial, support, home care) which have particular relevance to those 50-and-better. The gathering will occur at the Chestnut Hill Library on Tuesday, September 15. Mark your calendar for a day of enrichment and information-gathering.

3 things we want you to know

  • You are invited to an appetizer/dessert party and matinee performance of “Jake’s Women” at The Stagecrafters on Sunday, June 21 (Father’s Day). This is a fundraiser for our Center ($30 per person), and a perfect thing to honor the Dads in your life! Please RSVP by June 7th.
  • You can pay class fees by mail (check or money order), especially if your activity takes place off-site. Of course we love to see you, and would be happy if you came in person with cash, check or money order. Payment at the beginning of the month – or the course – is expected. All of this is meant to make life a little simpler for our teachers.
  • We want to communicate with you electronically! Please send your email address (even if you already provided it, and especially if you have a new one) to chseniors@cavtel.net.
